Matt Cupido’s Eight Golf Tips for Beginners

Matt Cupido’s Eight Golf Tips for Beginners

1. Take Lessons: No, you do not need a range finder or that $700 driver just yet! Consider taking lessons from a local Golf Coach. Yes, there are apps to help, yes, YouTube has a ton of fantastic golf content but nothing is better than someone right in front of you giving you professional advice.  They will start you with proper technique from the start.

2. Learn the Basics: Learn the fundamentals first. Everyone can have a good set up position. Grip, stance, posture and swing mechanics, practice these fundamentals regularly to build consistency.

3. Practice: This is no different from anything else in life, if you want to get better at anything you do you must practice. There is no secret to getting better, you can not buy a new club and  instantly get better, no magic pill! Embrace the challenge of learning a new skill, embrace the grind, proper practice will lead to rewarding results.

4. Short Game is your Friend: focus on understanding the short game. This is a critical skill in golf that is often overlooked by most players. This includes putting, green reading, chipping and pitching. A good amount of strokes will come from around the greens.

5. Play: Play as much as you can. It does not matter if it is 18 or 9 holes, this will help you gain real experience and identify what you can focus on more when you practice. If the course is tougher, consider playing from the forward tees, this is what they are there for! Learn how to improve, par for the course is just a number on the card, make Par 3s a 4, Par 4s a 5 and Par 5s a 6. When your scores start to get a better play the Par 3s as a 3 and go from there. Golf is game in which we can challenge ourselves and don’t need to make it about a certain number.

6. Learn Golf Etiquette: Golf has its own rules. Learning basic etiquette can go a long way when starting out, identify when your turn is coming up and being ready for it, make sure you’re not in someones way, keeping a consistent pace of play and please respect the golf course by replacing your divots when you can and fixing you ball marks on the green. This will ensure other players can enjoy the course as well. Personally, I enjoy listening to music on the golf course especially when with friends but I don’t think anyone wants to hear my playlist from the middle of the fairway. Lastly, remember is it not just you and your group out there, respect others around you.

7. Stay Patient: Golf is frustrating for everyone, especially beginners. Trust your process and stay patient with yourself. Getting mad will only lead to more frustration. Learn from the mistakes you make and understand why you made them. Take pride in small improvements, its a game that can be played for many years.

8. Have Fun: This will be always be rule number 1, HAVE FUN! Don’t get to caught up on your score or having to play well every time you play because you’re going to have bad days playing this crazy game, lots of them. You can always learn from the bad days and you can always have a good time with family and friends.

I encourage everyone to follow these tips. Golf is a game that can be played by everyone at any age, improvement is always possible even when it seems like it might not be. So, heres to more fun and better golf.
